The pattern of our total IS costs, at first glance, appears sporadic. Upon further investigation, though, consistency becomes apparent starting in year one. The costs at the beginning of year one include start-up expenses and the initial purchase of the IT infrastructure. Between years one and two our costs drop because only services that we initially purchased during start-up, such as internet and security systems, are used for administrative and overhead purposes. However, by year three costs spike up again because of software upgrades which occur every two to three years. Improvements in technology come rapidly, creating a demand for upgrades in software needed to develop, program, and produce technologically advanced products. This cycle will repeat with the intermediate costs, which increase slowly because of the addition of personnel and hardware correlating with our increase in trial units and expansion of internal operations. In the future, this pattern will continue predictably until we implement a major change in operations which would require us to rethink our IT infrastructure and necessary expenses. Adjustments for inflation were not made.

With advancements in technology made almost every day, it is critical for any organization to constantly analyze and update the IT infrastructure to maintain a competitive edge.
